DAU IS BORN

In 1894, Ferdinand Dau opened the first Dau Furniture Company at 18th and Cass Ave in St. Louis, Missouri. At a time when St. Louis was booming as the 4th largest city in the United States, Ferdinand Dau entered the furniture business out of necessity and remained in it through talent and dedication.
Born in Brandenburg, Germany, Ferdinand immigrated to St. Louis. Upon arrival, he took a job as a carpenter building street cars for the St. Louis Car Company. But when the laborers went on a year-long strike, Ferdinand had to find another means to feed his family.

Thus, Ferdinand took his carpentry skills and applied them to building basic children’s furniture, small cabinets, and wall beds from scrap wood. By the time the strike ended, Ferdinand’s small furniture business was a success and he expanded by opening Dau Furniture Company at 18th and Cass Ave. Shortly thereafter he moved his growing business to 21st and Cass Ave.
As the Victorian Era came to a close a fresh air of furniture styles took hold in America. Architects like Frank Lloyd Write changed the way people thought about home design and in the world of furniture; the Stickley brothers radically altered the concepts of home furnishings. At his new location, Ferdinand Dau began buying furniture from other manufacturers and selling them at his store. It would still be many years before furniture stores took on the design qualities they have today, at this time Dau Furniture Company sold everything from cribs to vacuum cleaners, but the foundation was laid for a St. Louis furniture store that would last the test of time.

THE GREAT DEPRESSION

In 1916, Dau Furniture was looking to expand both its showroom space and the family presence in the business. In that year, a new store was opened on Cherokee Street which would remain a fixture in St. Louis until 1979. Also in that year, Frederick joined his father, Ferdinand, in the business. The company was growing and by 1920 another store was opened, this time on Easton Ave in Wellston. Amazingly, a fourth store was opened just 8 years later on Grand & St. Louis Ave.

The good times did not last forever and when the Great Depression hit, the stores at Grand Ave and Cass Ave were closed. The Great Depression devastated the nation but Dau Furniture would persevere and continue to grow as suburban expansion took hold of the Midwest.

SUBURBAN EXPANSION

World War II had come and gone and another generation was ready to join the family business. In 1947, Frederick’s son Robert joined Dau Home Furnishings working at the Wellston location. The company had a reputation for their financing options and business flourished as St. Louis spread into the rapidly growing suburbs.

By 1959 a new store was added at Grasso Plaza in Affton. The idea of home furnishings as fashion was beginning to take hold and Dau’s furniture offerings began to change to reflect this. Gone were the vacuum cleaners and appliances and in their place were pieces that reflected the new Colonial influence on furniture. With a new showroom on Watson Road opened in 1974, the company became a Pennsylvania House Gallery, featuring traditionally styled upholstery and wood.

TRADITION CONTINUES

The current chapter in Dau’s history begins in 1975 when Paul joined his father, Robert, in the business. The store changed its location one more time when it moved into its current location on Manchester Road in 1979. With 6500 square feet of showroom space, the store continued to be heavily influenced by Colonial and Traditional furniture styles. In 1988, Dau Furniture became the exclusive St. Louis Stickley dealer and was perfectly poised for the introduction of Stickley’s Mission collection. The company profile continued to evolve through the 90’s as once again the “fashion” of furniture became increasingly popular. The showroom has continue to diversify with the growth in popularity of personal style in home decore. Design has became a major focus of the company and the showroom evolved to show a number of styles and design points of view. Today, Dau Furniture offers the St. Louis community high quality furniture from a broad reach of styles. Customers can find everything from contemporary to traditional styles with many customizable options all at Dau.

Truly a family run business, Paul’s wife Theresa runs the office and the fifth generation is already making big impacts in the company’s landscape. Paul and Theresa’s daughter, Cara, heads up the service department.  Paul and Theresa’s son, Ryan, wears many hats including managing the most recent addition to Dau, Dau Neu (The Next Generation of Style).  The next chapter is set and waiting to unfold…
